Patricia Barr, left, and Cynthia Mykytyshyn of the Wall Space Gallery on Richmond Rd. prepare pieces of art currently appearing in the gallery's latest exhibit, "It's Only a Paper Moon." The exhibit continues until Aug. 10.
That's what art enthusiasts who visit the Wall Space Gallery between now and Aug. 10 will discover when they view the gallery's latest exhibit, "It's Only a Paper Moon." Featuring the works of Alexandra Chowaniec, Orli Kessel, Isaiah King, Anthony Tremmaglia, Noelle Hamlyn and more, the exhibit showcases a variety of different pieces created on paper or of paper.
"The idea for this exhibit came to fruition back in April when we collected some paper pieces from some of the artists featured in the show," explained Patricia Barr, who conducts community relations for the Wall Space Gallery. "We didn't have an opportunity to showcase these pieces until now." As more paper pieces were collected in the weeks and months to follow, and thanks to inspiration from the lyrics of Nat King Cole's song, "It's Only a Paper Moon," Ms. Barr said the collection slowly began to come together until the time finally felt right to display the artwork.
"We felt summer was a good time to showcase it because all of the artists were going to be in the area during one week in July," she said.
To take advantage of this opportunity, a reception featuring the artists was held at the gallery on Wednesday, July 28.
Ms. Chowaniec is a visual artist who creates oil paintings that conceptualize the human figure within contemporary visual culture. She is an MFA graduate from the San Francisco Art Institute and received her BFA Honors in Painting from Queen's University. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
Mr. King is a Canadian-born graphic designer and artist living and working in New York City. His printmaking and drawing works pursue an ongoing study of the human form in all its complex, emotive facets. He is a graduate of Canterbury's Visual Arts program in Ottawa and has a degree in Graphic Design from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.
Ms. Kessel received her BFAH in printmaking from Queen's University and is currently involved in a residence program in Israel with Omnoot, a young non-profit organization, based in Tel Aviv.
Mr. Tremmaglia is a practicing illustrator, artist, and educator. He combines texture, drawing, and photographs in multi-layered works.
He graduated from the advanced illustration program at Toronto's Sheridan College and holds recognition from the design program at Algonquin College, where he currently teaches.
Ms. Hamlyn lives in Toronto and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited at Unity and Diversity Canadian Pavilion, Cheongju International Craft Biennale, Cheongju, South Korea.
"This is a very unique exhibit for us to have because we've been finding this art form is not necessarily getting its due recognition," Ms. Barr continued.
OFFICIAL OPENING The exhibit officially opened on July 17 and, according to Ms. Barr, it has been a tremendous success so far.
"People began trickling in on the first day the exhibit opened while a lot more people came to see it the following day," she said. "So far, the reception has been terrific. Some of our clients who have been collecting the works of these artists are very excited about having the opportunity to meet them." Wall Space Gallery is open Monday to Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
